Direct answer

What should a buyer know first?

A mailer box is typically designed around an integrated opening and presentation experience; a shipping box prioritizes packing, closure and transport as an outer carton. Some mailers can ship directly, but suitability depends on product load, dimensions, closure and distribution conditions.

02

Map the delivery journey

Define whether the box travels by parcel network, pallet, local delivery or inside another carton. A visually strong mailer may still need an outer protective system in a demanding route.

For shipping boxes, state the closure method and packing line needs. For mailers, describe the opening experience, return expectations and whether the internal print is visible.

03

Internal dimensions and inserts

Use internal dimensions for product fit and show the orientation in which the product is packed. Inserts, tissue and accessories reduce usable space and can change lid closure.

Avoid adding a generic allowance without the actual product and structure. Product tolerance, board construction and packing method should be reviewed together.

04

Print and closure decisions

Mailer boxes can present branding across multiple panels, but every printed area should be mapped to the correct dieline face. Shipping boxes may need simple identification or handling information instead of full presentation graphics.

Tape, locking tabs and any adhesive features should be stated in the RFQ. Do not assume the same closure performs equally across different board builds.

05

Sample the packing sequence

Assemble the sample, pack the real product, close it using the intended method and open it as the recipient would. Check that the product does not interfere with tabs or create panel bulging.

Approve the role, closure and dimensions of the chosen format only after that packing trial is complete.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a mailer box be used as the shipping box?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the product, board, dimensions, closure and handling route. Confirm the actual pack and distribution conditions.
Should I provide internal or external size?
State which dimension type you provide. Internal size is usually the clearer starting point for product fit.
Do inserts change the mailer size?
Yes. Inserts consume internal space and may change product orientation, wall clearance and lid closure.
