What should a buyer know first?

A packaging sample should be checked against a written specification and the real packed product. Verify revision, dimension type, assembly, fit, closure, insert contact, artwork orientation, color reference and finish. Record unresolved items instead of treating a partial sample as final approval.

Know what the sample can prove

A blank structural sample can prove fit and assembly but not final print. A color proof can support artwork review but may not represent every production material effect. A finished sample can combine more decisions, yet must still match the documented specification.

Ask which aspects are representative and which remain to be confirmed.

Check fit with everything included

Pack the item, insert, board, accessories and documents in their intended order. Check sensitive contact points, finger access and whether the product remains in the correct orientation.

Close and reopen the package. Confirm that tabs do not damage the product and the insert does not interfere with the lid.

Review graphics on the assembled pack

Read all panels in the assembled orientation. Check copy, color callouts, image position, fold alignment and visible cut edges. Fine text near folds or windows deserves particular attention.

Compare the surface with the agreed physical reference under suitable lighting. A PDF approval alone cannot confirm material sheen or tactile effect.

Return precise comments

Mark comments by panel or dimension and separate required changes from observations. If a revision is requested, do not approve the old sample by accident.

Keep open items visible until the revised sample or specification resolves them; approval should not silently carry across versions.
