CMYK vs Pantone for Custom Packaging

Understand when to specify CMYK process color, Pantone spot colors or a combined approach for custom paper packaging artwork.

Packaging artwork color and print preparation reference sheet

Direct answer

What should a buyer know first?

CMYK builds images and a broad color range from four process inks. Pantone references are used to communicate specific spot colors. The best route depends on artwork, color criticality, substrate, coverage and print process; a screen preview is not a production color approval.

02

Choose from the artwork, not the logo file name

A design with photographs and gradients usually needs a process-color approach. A limited palette with a critical brand color may benefit from a spot-color discussion. Some projects combine methods, but that should be agreed before final separations.

Supply editable vector artwork where possible and identify every intended spot color. Do not leave a named swatch in the file if it is meant to convert to process color.

03

Paper changes perceived color

White, kraft, metallic and textured surfaces do not present ink in the same way. Lamination or another surface finish can also change gloss and perceived depth.

A color value viewed on a bright display is not a reliable prediction of printed packaging. Approve against the proposed material and finish.

04

State what must match

Distinguish between a general visual direction and a color-critical brand requirement. If matching another physical package, provide a retained reference and identify the area to compare.

For Pantone communication, specify the exact reference system used. For CMYK, confirm the supplied profile or production expectations with the artwork handoff.

05

Build a controlled approval path

Check artwork separations, overprint intent, small reversed type and areas crossing folds or cuts. Then use the proof or sample type appropriate to the decision being made.

Document the approved color route, substrate and physical reference instead of relying on an unspecified screen target.

Buyer questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Pantone always more accurate than CMYK?
Not as a blanket rule. Pantone is a useful spot-color specification system, but printed appearance still depends on ink, substrate, finish and production control.
Can CMYK print a brand color?
It can approximate many colors, but the suitability depends on the target and substrate. Mark brand-critical colors for review.
Why does kraft change the artwork?
The brown base remains part of the visual result, especially in unprinted and lightly printed areas.
