Finishes Guide
See how finishing options affect appearance and artwork preparation.
Describe the appearance and handling you need before selecting a finishing name. Ask which options are feasible on the proposed paper and approve an identified physical reference.
Specify how the mark should look and feel
For matte or gloss lamination, hot foil, embossing or debossing, spot UV or coating, identify the visible face and the intended colour, gloss, texture or relief. For black on black, explain which difference should make the logo visible and under what lighting.
Mark large solid areas, small type, fine lines and reversed details separately. Ask the print provider to confirm the proposed colour build, separations and finish on the actual substrate; no universal black ink recipe follows from a screen image.
Approve the complete printed and folded sample
Identify the paper, printed faces and finishing sequence represented by the sample. Review appearance after folding and ordinary handling, including visible creases, rubbing areas and any window or glue positions.
Record the approved reference and any limits agreed for the job. If board, logo detail or finish changes, ask which checks must be repeated. A photograph of an effect does not establish that every process can produce it on your pack.
Check the whole construction before environmental wording
Identify the board, coating or film, adhesive, window and removable parts, and state the market and collection route you have in mind. Ask what evidence covers that exact combination.
“Water-based”, “paper-based” or “unlaminated” does not by itself establish recycling or composting acceptance for a finished pack. Keep those questions separate and check the relevant collection and assessment requirements; Cepi’s guidance below discusses paper-packaging recycling and differences between national systems.
Common questions
- Does a matte appearance identify the finishing process?
- Specify the target appearance and ask the producer to name the proposed process and substrate. Similar-looking effects can use different constructions.
- Does an environmental statement for a coating cover the box?
- Check whether the evidence addresses the coating alone, a material combination or the finished pack, and whether it applies to the intended market and collection route.
